Ok, before we get started, this is by no means a complete list of stuff that you will need. Because of it's very nature, the Web will contain things that you hear or read about that you would like to explore in more depth. Now it's just a matter of finding that stuff. This is the most thorough article I could find on line about searching: Linda Barlow's The Spider's Apprentice or, "How to Use Web Search Engines".

Getting started with email

• Eudora for the Macintosh? A large tip 'o the beany to Blaine Wasylkiw for this be-all, end-all Macintosh Eudora page.

• First, the bad news: There is NO perfect way to find email addresses. The good news: This FAQ may be helpful.

• A list of DTD's and how to choose the right one.

• Here is a listing of publicly accessible Mailing Lists.

• Sooner or later, you will need to ask an expert. Make sure that before you do, you have read the FAQ. Here is a listing of FAQs by newsgroup. If you can't find what you're looking for try the one below.

• Many FAQs can be found in this searchable on-line database, and others can be found in the newsgroups comp.answers, misc.answers, news.answers, rec.answers, sci.answers, soc.answers, and talk.answers.

HTML Tutorials

• If we agree that there are four things the Web can be used for (Educate, Inform, Entertain, and Persuade) why would anyone wish to limit their audience artificially? Here is the excellent Best viewed with any Browser page.

• A very in-depth collection of Multimedia tutorials from Equinox Multimedia Web.

• Say Friends, before we get into any kind of html document writing, let's find out what our audience is using to view our work. Some Browser statistics from the good people at browserwatch.

• It's here, my good man, it's here! Class 12's Incredible HTML tutorial collection. This list will continue to grow as we discover the best of the on-line tutorials.

• Class 12 tutorials? Class 12? What about 13? No lobsters on these Mobsters

• Joe Burns excellent HTML Tutorials Joe makes a name for himself with these concise lessons and tutorials for quick (and relatively painless) understanding of HTML mark-up. Great no matter what level of competence you have attained.

• A Good (if kinda dry) Primer page from Purdue U.

• Learning HTML is not difficult. One of the main problems are sites that either misinform you, or give you bad advice. This will take you to the current standards. If you are in doubt, this is the last word on accurate HTML information. It's also good for settling bets. Just kidding.

• Interactive Tutorial for Writing HTML Not quite as good as Joe's IMHO, but pretty useful just the same.

• Extensions to HTML 2.0

• Extensions to HTML 3.0

• Extensions to HTML 3.2 (Current Specifications.)

• This is kind of neat... We know that only Netscape supports the use of mailto: in a form, so, to ensure cross platform feedback, we need to use a cgi script. No problem! Here is a collection of common scripts from the good folks at Yahoo.

• Want to stay current? Confused about which tags are read by all browsers? Here is the F.A.Q from the W3 consortium. There is a slightly more up-to-date F.A.Q. from html Help which is the de facto F.A.Q. for the newsgroup comp.infosystems.www.authoring.html. If they don't have it, you don't need it.

• Can't figure out what the problem is? Do what all good content-providers do: see the WWW Authoring HTML FAQ

• An excellent animated gif tutorial...Use this power for Good and not Evil.

Writing Resources

• If you're going to write, learn to write good. Seriously, there is no better resource for improving your ability to express yourself through the written word than Strunk and White's Elements of Style online.

• If you are going to write, here is a great resource for spicing up your writing: the ever popular Bartlett's Quotations on-line.

Color Stuff (As it relates to the WWW)

• Here is a detailed page on the difference between Macintosh and PC Color palettes

• Friends, if you are getting tired of having your carefully chosen colours dither away on a PC or Mac, it's time to reference Lisa Lopuck's article for Adobe Magazine on the discriminating color palette.

• A tip o' the beany to Wayne Brown for suggesting this browser Color Specification page

• Bob Smith wrote a clear explanation of palettes and how they relate to the Web for Web Review. This should clear up any lingering questions you may have about palette issues and the Web.

• An extremely in-depth resource from Web Resource on all things image and color related. Excellent! One stop shopping.

• Here is Lynda Weinman's explanation of the "Color safe palettes ", and here is the download site for the CLUT for browsers to solve those cross platform, unknown browser problems.

• If what you have to say is important, is it important enough for you to make it available to everyone? Test it out with Bobby, the validator for people with disabilities.

• DJ Delorie's backward compatibility viewer is a great place to find "gotchas". Among other things, there is also a cool search engine simulator. Go see for yourself!
